Ilir Meta, the former Albanian president and current leader of the Freedom Party, was questioned for two hours by prosecutors at SPAK (Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime). The investigation is focused on Meta’s alleged lobbying efforts in the United States.
In a statement following the session, Meta’s lawyer, Genc Gjokutaj, confirmed that the questioning was strictly related to the US lobbying case. He said that despite not having access to full case files, Meta cooperated fully with the prosecutors.
“Today, Meta was questioned only about the lobbying activities in the US. He was open and shared everything he could remember, without referring to documents that we have not yet received,” Gjokutaj explained.
Meta is currently under arrest and facing a series of serious charges, including corruption in three separate cases, money laundering, and asset concealment.
Meta, a long-time figure in Albanian politics, served as president from 2017 to 2022. He has previously denied any wrongdoing, calling the charges politically motivated. The investigation comes as Albania continues to face pressure to address corruption, with the European Union closely monitoring the situation.
