Edison Memolla, the mayor of Rrogozhina, Albania, has been sentenced to one year in prison for committing electoral fraud during the 2022 local elections.
The Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO) also banned Memolla from holding any public office for the next five years.
Memolla, a candidate of the Socialist Party, was caught on video asking an electrician not to cut power to a debtor in exchange for the debtor’s vote.
Speaking outside the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK), Memolla stated he would appeal the ruling and wait for the full written judgment before commenting on his potential resignation.
“We will wait for the decision to be finalized and follow the legal steps to appeal,” Memolla said.
He appeared in court earlier today, accompanied by his lawyer.
