Israel’s government is set to approve a landmark deal today that will bring an end to the 15-month conflict in Gaza, with the release of hostages and a pause in fighting.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the deal, which will see dozens of hostages freed in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, will be approved later today. The ceasefire will also allow displaced Palestinians to return to their homes.
A special task force is already preparing to welcome the hostages, and their families have been informed.
But the deal has sparked division within Netanyahu’s coalition, with hardline Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir threatening to resign if the ceasefire is passed.
The war, which began in October 2023 following a deadly Hamas attack on Israel, has already claimed over 1,200 Israeli lives and more than 46,000 Palestinian lives.
