Greece has just experienced its hottest winter and summer on record, with the country reporting unprecedented temperature highs and rainfall figures for 2024.
According to the Greek Meteorological Office, the highest temperature recorded was a scorching 44.5°C on June 13, on the island of Crete. In a surprising contrast, the lowest temperature of the year hit -19.8°C in Florina on January 22, marking an extreme swing in the country’s climate.
When it comes to rainfall, the country also saw a remarkable 435 millimeters fall in just one day, near the “Simon Petra” monastery, close to Halkidiki. This heavy rainfall was one of the most significant weather events of the year.
“The winter of 2023-2024 was the warmest winter in the country’s history, and the summer of 2024 was the hottest summer in the country’s history,” the report states.
