Kosovo’s government has angered the EU by moving to shut down Serbian-run operations across the country today – and the bloc isn’t happy about it!
In a fiery statement, the European Union slammed Kosovo’s actions, saying they’ve broken promises to the EU and put the country’s future in jeopardy. The crackdown saw police close down Serbian-controlled municipalities in key areas like Lipjan, Obiliq, and Pristina, sparking outrage.
The EU hit back, warning that Kosovo’s decision to target Serbia-backed operations in the midst of a tense election campaign goes directly against its obligations under the EU’s peace plan. “These actions go against Kosovo’s commitment to the EU,” the statement read, as the EU vowed to keep a close eye on the situation.
Kosovo police swooped in, shutting down a series of illegal Serbian posts and tax offices, along with municipal buildings. This is the latest in a long-running battle between Kosovo and Serbia over territorial control.
Kosovo’s Interior Minister, Xhelal Sveçla, celebrated the operation as a major victory, claiming, “Today marks the end of Serbian parallel structures in Kosovo!”
Meanwhile, Elbert Krasniqi, Kosovo’s Local Government Minister, didn’t mince words, declaring, “28 Serbian-run municipalities and their five districts are CLOSED FOR GOOD!”
The EU, however, wasn’t pleased, warning that these aggressive moves could undermine the delicate peace process and slow down the lifting of sanctions. Kosovo’s future is now hanging in the balance as the EU pushes for more dialogue with Serbia to resolve the tensions.
