President Joe Biden has unveiled stricter sanctions to tackle corruption and threats to stability in the Western Balkans, targeting those accused of undermining peace and democracy.
U.S President Joe Biden has announced tougher sanctions targeting individuals and groups involved in corruption and actions that threaten stability in the Western Balkans.
The executive order expands existing measures, freezing U.S.-linked assets of those accused of undermining peace agreements, democratic institutions, and regional security. The move also blocks property belonging to individuals implicated in human rights abuses or significant corruption, including bribery and the misappropriation of public funds.
The White House said the decision reflects the need for stronger action against those undermining governance in the Balkans. “Corruption and destabilizing activities jeopardize not only the region’s progress but also international efforts to support peace and stability,” the statement read.
The sanctions extend to family members and those who provide financial or material support to sanctioned individuals. They also target violations of landmark agreements, such as the Dayton Accords and the Prespa Agreement, which have been critical to maintaining peace in the region.
This comes amid rising concerns over political tensions and corruption across the Western Balkans. U.S. officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of protecting democratic values and the rule of law in the region.
