DJ Mikaela, a relative of Azerbaijan’s president, was arrested in Greece on drug trafficking charges following a raid at a party near Athens on December 30.
DJ Mikaela, whose real name is Izzat Khanim Javadova and who is connected to Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, has been detained by Greek authorities on charges of drug trafficking. The arrest took place on December 30 during a police raid at a party near Athens, where drugs and a large sum of unexplained cash were seized.
Javadova, 43, faces accusations of drug possession and trafficking. Greek police spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidou confirmed that the DJ had drugs in her possession, along with a substantial amount of money believed to be linked to drug sales at the event.
Speaking to the press, Javadova denied the charges. “I didn’t organise the party, nor did I send out any invitations,” she said. “They didn’t find drugs on me.” She also dismissed the accusations as an unfair attack on the LGBTQ community, claiming the media portrayal of partygoers as drug users was unjust.
The police operation saw ten people arrested at the party, all facing various drug-related charges.
This isn’t Javadova’s first brush with controversy. In 2021, the UK National Crime Agency (NCA) investigated her and her husband, Suleyman Javadov, over suspicious financial dealings. A joint investigation by OCCRP and Transparency International revealed that they were linked to the so-called Azerbaijani Laundromat, a scheme allegedly used to launder money and bribe politicians. The couple denied any wrongdoing but later settled with the NCA, agreeing to return £4 million after admitting to bringing funds into the UK illegally.
