Archbishop Anastasios Yanulatos, 95, remains in a critical state in the intensive care unit of Athens’ Evangelismos Hospital, following a sudden health decline over the weekend.
The head of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania was transferred from Tirana to Athens on 3 January aboard a military aircraft, after initially being treated for what was suspected to be a viral infection. His condition worsened on Saturday evening, prompting an urgent medical response.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Yanulatos on Sunday to receive updates on his condition. Later, Archbishop Ieronymos of Greece arrived at the hospital to offer prayers and support.
According to a statement from the medical team, led by pulmonology professor Anastasia Kotanidou, the Archbishop’s situation is being monitored around the clock. His deteriorating health has sparked concern across the Orthodox community.
A towering figure in the Church, Yanulatos is revered for his efforts to rebuild Albania’s Orthodox Christian presence after decades of suppression under communism. Faithful in both Albania and Greece are now praying for his recovery.
