Archbishop Anastasios, the head of the Orthodox Church of Albania, has been moved to intensive care after a sudden deterioration in his health. The 95-year-old religious leader, who had been recovering from intubation, has been re-intubated as his condition worsened.
The Orthodox Church confirmed the move, stating that the Archbishop is now receiving critical care at Athens’ Evangelismos hospital. His condition had taken a turn for the worse following complications related to a virus he had been battling since December 30. On January 3, he was airlifted to Athens for more specialized treatment.
The Church of Greece has been closely monitoring the situation, with members of the Holy Synod visiting the Archbishop and offering their support. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also paid a visit to check on the Archbishop’s progress.
Anastasios, who has been at the helm of the Albanian Orthodox Church for decades, has received an outpouring of support and prayers from across Albania and Greece. Archbishop Ieronymos, the leader of the Orthodox Church of Greece, has also sent his well-wishes for a swift recovery.
