Albania will host the opening stages of the Giro d’Italia in 2025, cementing its place as a rising star on the global sporting map.
Prime Minister Edi Rama made the announcement during a special ceremony in Rome at the prestigious Auditorium Parco della Musica. The Giro d’Italia, one of the most celebrated cycling events in the world, has chosen Albania for its Grand Départ, marking a historic first for the Balkan nation.
“This is more than a sporting event; it’s a chance to showcase Albania’s natural beauty to millions,” said Rama, who hailed the Giro as a bridge between Albanian and Italian cultures.
The event, which has a 114-year tradition, will feature stages in Tirana, Durrës, and Vlora, drawing the world’s top cyclists. The race will be broadcast live to over 200 countries, with organisers expecting hundreds of millions of viewers.
Rama expressed pride in Albania’s growth as a tourist destination, noting a sharp rise in Italian visitors. “In 2024, we welcomed 1.4 million Italian tourists, a remarkable jump from 800,000 in 2023,” he said.
The Prime Minister promised a spectacular race, with routes designed to highlight Albania’s stunning scenery. “From majestic mountains to pristine seas, Albania offers a unique experience. These stages will feel like scenes from a film,” he added.
The Giro d’Italia is expected to boost Albania’s tourism industry further, putting the nation firmly on the map for international travellers.
