The three countries aim to connect their energy grids with an underwater cable, boosting green energy exports from Albania.
Albania, Italy, and the United Arab Emirates have signed an important agreement to create an underwater energy link between Albania and Italy. The deal, signed today in Abu Dhabi, will help Albania increase its green energy production and become an exporter of energy to the European Union.
Prime Minister Edi Rama of Albania, who is in Abu Dhabi for the UAE’s Sustainability Week, spoke about the project, saying it would reduce Albania’s dependence on energy imports. “This connection will allow us to supply green energy to the EU, and this is a big step toward energy independence,” said Rama. The energy link is expected to be ready in three years.
The project will be a joint venture with Albania, Italy, and the UAE each owning a part of it. Italy’s Terna and the UAE’s National Energy Company will help develop the link. The underwater cable will run from Albania’s Vlora to Italy’s Puglia region, allowing Albania to export green energy to Italy.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised the project. “This energy link will help both Albania and Italy make the transition to green energy,” she said. “It’s a project for our governments, businesses, and energy companies to work on together.”
Rama also discussed Albania’s success with solar energy. “Solar energy has grown from nothing to nearly 10% of our total energy production, and we plan to reach 30% if we win a fourth term,” he said, showing the country’s commitment to clean energy.
Albania has also kept energy prices stable during the European energy crisis. Starting February 1, the country will reduce energy prices by 10.5%, making it the only European nation to lower prices. This move will help over 1 million consumers save money on their energy bills.
This new deal is an important step in the growing energy partnership between Albania, Italy, and the UAE, and shows Albania’s determination to be a leader in the European green energy market.
