Around 300 Afghan refugees are stranded in the Albanian coastal town of Shëngjin after former U.S. President Donald Trump froze foreign aid, halting their resettlement.
The group had been awaiting transfer to the United States under a program that has already resettled nearly 200,000 Afghans since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. However, the freeze has put a stop to flights for over 40,000 refugees, leaving those in Albania in limbo.
Shëngjin, a quiet beach town, has become an unexpected home for the displaced families, who remain uncertain about their future.
The aid suspension follows Trump’s broader push to cut foreign spending, sparking criticism from advocacy groups for leaving vulnerable populations in difficult conditions.
