A late-night attack on Kosovo’s water infrastructure has been condemned as “unforgivable” by the US Ambassador Jeff Hovenier, who demanded those responsible be brought to justice.
The attack in Zubin Potok targeted a key water channel from Lake Ujman, threatening power, heating, and drinking water supplies for the region.
“We strongly condemn this terrible act, which puts lives at risk,” said Hovenier. “The perpetrators must be found and held accountable.”
He spoke after meeting Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Western diplomats. Kurti accused Serbia of masterminding the attack, calling it a “Russian-style” tactic to destabilize the country and sow divisions.
“They tried to cut us off from water, electricity, and heat in the middle of winter,” Kurti said. “But they failed. Kosovo is strong, and our institutions are ready.”
Belgrade has denied any involvement.
Arrests and investigations
Kosovo police have arrested eight people over the attack. One suspect has already been detained for a month as investigations continue.
The US and EU have both offered their support. EU spokesperson Anitta Hipper praised Kosovo for launching a probe, saying, “The perpetrators must face justice.”
Hovenier promised the US would help bring those responsible to justice. “We all want to see accountability for this terrible crime,” he said.
The attack has further strained Kosovo-Serbia relations, already tense amid ongoing disputes over sovereignty and territory.
