Tirana will host the NATO summit in 2027, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced, marking a significant moment for the country’s growing influence on the global stage. The announcement comes as Albania also prepares to host the European Political Community summit in 2025.
Tirana will host the NATO summit in 2027, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced in a year-end briefing. This marks a major milestone for Albania, highlighting its growing influence on the global stage.
Rama said the event would further boost the country’s international standing. “This is a proud moment for a small country like ours,” he stated. “We are now seen and respected in a way we’ve never experienced before.”
The NATO summit will be a key event for Albania, just two years after it hosts the European Political Community summit in 2025. “The arrival of NATO leaders and the US president in Tirana will send a powerful message about Albania’s new role in international politics,” Rama added.
Albania, a NATO member since 2009, has been strengthening its ties with the alliance while also working towards deeper EU integration.
Albania takes action on social media safety
Rama also addressed growing concerns about the impact of social media on young people, following the tragic stabbing death of a 14-year-old student in November. The incident, which involved a fight between minors, has raised alarms over the role social media plays in encouraging violence.
In response, the Albanian government is moving ahead with plans to block TikTok for at least a year. “We are committed to protecting our children,” Rama said. “This decision has the backing of over 90% of parents.”
The move comes amid ongoing concerns about online safety for minors, with Albania also pledging to consult with parents and schools on further actions to limit the risks posed by social media.
