Albania’s Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution (SPAK) celebrated its 5th anniversary today, highlighting its progress in tackling corruption and organized crime. SPAK head Altin Dumani provided an overview of the institution’s achievements, stressing its commitment to holding powerful individuals accountable.
Since its creation, SPAK has opened 1,809 criminal cases involving 2,496 people. Of these, 1,387 individuals have been sent to trial. Dumani pointed out that these results show SPAK’s dedication to justice and to holding those who break the law responsible, particularly in cases of corruption.
SPAK has filed 1,097 criminal cases related to corruption, with 1,036 people under investigation. Among them, 61 are high-ranking officials, and 70% of these cases have been sent to trial. SPAK has also tackled organized crime, opening 494 criminal cases against 955 individuals. Additionally, 50 cases related to terrorism have been initiated, involving 29 suspects.
Dumani also highlighted SPAK’s international cooperation, mentioning the creation of 42 joint investigative teams, 27 of which are currently active. The institution has signed agreements with several European countries, including Italy, Spain, and Kosovo, as well as the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. SPAK has seized over €182 million in assets obtained illegally.
Dumani expressed his gratitude to his predecessor, Arben Kraja, for building the foundation of SPAK and praised the continued work of its prosecutors, investigators, and international partners. He also acknowledged the challenges faced by the team, including threats and false accusations.
“Our mission continues,” Dumani said. “We owe it to future generations, and we will keep fighting for justice.”
