Erion Veliaj, the Mayor of Tirana, is under investigation for alleged corruption, SPAK said in a statement issued today.
The investigation, led by Albania’s Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SPAK), stems from claims of passive and active corruption, money laundering, and failure to declare assets. Veliaj was questioned for five hours by prosecutors, who have gathered evidence suggesting his involvement in illegal activities.
SPAK initiated the probe in early 2024 after a whistleblower reported the mayor’s alleged misconduct. The charges involve corruption offenses by public officials and elected local representatives, alongside accusations of financial concealment. Despite the evidence presented, Veliaj has rejected the allegations, claiming they are part of an orchestrated effort to discredit him.
The case has drawn significant attention, with Veliaj’s supporters arguing that it is politically motivated. Veliaj remains a prominent figure in Albanian politics, and his leadership in Tirana has been central to various local development initiatives.
The Special Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed the filing of criminal charges, and the investigation is ongoing.
