Kosovo’s final results from the 2024 Population, Household, and Housing Census (ReKos 2024) show that the country has a population of 1.6 million, according to the Kosovo Agency of Statistics (ASK).
The census reveals significant changes since the last one in 2011. The number of residential buildings has increased by 21.5%, and the total number of homes has grown by 41.3%. The number of regular homes has also risen by 35%. The gap between men and women has reduced by 53.8%, from 11,975 in 2011 to 5,538 in 2024.
In education, Kosovo’s illiteracy rate has dropped from 3.85% in 2011 to 2.27% in 2024. This shows improvement in literacy levels. However, the census also highlights the lasting effects of the 1999 conflict, with 154,272 households affected by damages worth €5 billion. The war caused 11,417 deaths.
Avni Kastrati, Executive Director of ASK, said the census data will help guide future decisions in Kosovo. “This data will be important for planning in different areas,” Kastrati added.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti also welcomed the census results, saying they would help in making important decisions for the country. “These results give us a clearer view of Kosovo’s population and economy,” he said.
The census took place from April 5 to May 24, 2024, and was praised by international experts for its efficiency. The last census was held in 2011.
