Kosovo is increasing its military strength with a record investment in defence. Defence Minister Ejup Maqedonci announced the purchase of advanced drones and the building of a new ammunition factory. These steps are part of efforts to improve Kosovo’s security and readiness for potential threats.
Kosovo is investing heavily in its military, with Defence Minister Ejup Maqedonci revealing a record budget of nearly 170 million euros in 2024 to strengthen the country’s security forces.
Speaking at a press conference, Maqedonci announced that the Kosovo Army, Police, and other security institutions are now better equipped than ever to tackle threats to the nation’s sovereignty.
“Our forces are prepared to face any challenge,” he said. “This investment ensures Kosovo’s security and protection of our citizens.”
The country has spent over 270 million euros in military acquisitions over the last four years, a stark contrast to just four million euros between 2017 and 2020. Key investments include the purchase of Bayraktar drones from Turkey, which will significantly enhance Kosovo’s aerial capabilities.
Maqedonci also confirmed that Kosovo is establishing an ammunition factory in partnership with Turkey’s state-owned defence manufacturer, Makine ve Kimya Endüstrisi (MKE). The factory will produce ammunition to NATO standards and is expected to serve Kosovo’s military while facilitating exports to NATO countries.
“This is a game-changer for Kosovo’s defence industry,” Maqedonci said. “For the first time, we are building a foundation for a self-sustaining defence sector.”
The minister concluded by stressing that Kosovo’s military is now stronger, better equipped, and more prepared than ever to support both national security and international operations with NATO allies.
