Albania’s reform efforts will be reviewed by the EU on December 17. European Affairs ministers will evaluate the country’s progress on key rule-of-law reforms, especially in the justice system.
The EU has called on Albania to step up efforts in prosecuting high-level officials, securing convictions, and seizing criminal assets, particularly in the fight against corruption.
On December 18, Albania will open talks on the foreign policy chapter at the Third Intergovernmental Conference. This chapter is expected to progress quickly, as Albania has fully aligned its policies with the EU, including sanctions on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.
Albania aims to join the EU by 2027, with reforms in areas like media freedom and public administration remaining a top priority.
The EU’s conclusions, which will be confirmed by the European Council on December 19, will praise Albania’s progress but also push for more action on corruption and organized crime.
