The leader of Albania’s Democratic Party has promised that if his party comes to power, it will write off all fines imposed on citizens for unpaid electricity and water bills.
In a statement to the press, the party leader criticized the current government for passing a law, which he described as a “bogus” measure, to forgive fines related to construction permits in rural areas. He argued that this law was unconstitutional, citing a ruling by the Constitutional Court declaring the fines unlawful.
“Every government is obligated to return fines imposed based on unconstitutional laws,” the party leader said. Despite the Court’s decision, he added, the government has continued fining citizens, while falsely claiming to writing them off.
The Democratic Party leader also said his party would go further, writing off fines for pensioners, low-income families, and workers with average or below-average wages. Additionally, all fines for unpaid electricity and water bills would be canceled.
“I urge all citizens who have been fined to hold off on paying,” he said. “When we are in power, these fines will be completely written off.”
