The festive season is in full swing, but while people are busy celebrating, cybercriminals are hard at work. The National Authority for Cybersecurity (NAC) has reported a staggering 8,506 data breaches in 2024, urging the public to stay alert as online scams reach their peak.
Esmeralda Kazia, Director of Cyber Incident Monitoring and Reporting at the NAC, warned that fraudsters are targeting individuals more aggressively this year.
“Holiday cheer often distracts people, making it the perfect time for online scammers,” Kazia said. “We’ve seen a sharp rise in financial cyberattacks, with thousands falling victim to fraudulent schemes.”
How to protect yourself
The NAC is advising people to take simple precautions to avoid becoming a target:
- Think before you click: If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
- Secure your devices: Keep software up to date and use strong, unique passwords.
- Shop smart: Stick to reputable websites for online purchases.
“By staying cautious, you can keep your data and finances safe,” Kazia added.
A time for caution
As online shopping grows, so does the sophistication of cybercriminals. The NAC urges anyone who notices suspicious activity to report it immediately. Staying informed and vigilant is the best defense during this holiday season.
