Sali Berisha has declared 2024 a year of political resurgence for Albania’s opposition, despite ongoing challenges and government resistance.
In his end-of-year remarks, the leader of the Democratic Party focused on the opposition’s successes in pushing back against the government, citing its efforts to expose the criminal links of figures like Altin Dumani, which the opposition considers a key ally of the ruling party.
“2024 was the year the Albanian opposition rose strongly,” Berisha stated, highlighting the party’s role in pushing back against Prime Minister Edi Rama’s administration.
However, as the new year approaches, Berisha faces a critical moment. The Special Prosecution Against Corruption (SPAK) has requested that he remain under house arrest in 2025. The Special Appeal Court will make a final ruling on January 3.
Berisha, undeterred, said: “SPAK is carrying out orders from Edi Rama, but I will continue to fight against this regime with all my strength.”
Berisha also took aim at the government’s plans for the 2027 NATO summit, asserting that the event would highlight Albania’s contributions to NATO – a contrast to Rama’s past opposition to the alliance.
Looking ahead, Berisha warned that the opposition would not only contest the spring elections with a clear agenda but would also consider civil disobedience if necessary.
