Thousands of Serbs gathered in Novi Sad on Tuesday, demanding justice after a concrete wall collapsed at the city’s railway station last week, killing 14 people.
Protesters called for accountability from top officials, including Prime Minister Milosh Vu?evi? and the mayor of Novi Sad, Milan ?uri?. They attempted to march toward the site of the collapse but were blocked by police, leading to clashes. Some protesters threw flares and paint at the municipal building.
Authorities arrested Goran Jesi?, the former mayor of Indija, during the protest. Police have opened an investigation into the 2021 repair work at the station, with suspicions of negligence.
President Aleksandar Vu?i? pledged that those responsible would face consequences, saying, “No one will escape accountability.” Meanwhile, Interior Minister Ivica Da?i? condemned the violence, warning that those responsible for the clashes would be prosecuted.
On Tuesday, protests also took place in Belgrade, where demonstrators called for the resignation of Construction Minister Goran Vesi?. Following the protests, Vesi? submitted his resignation.
