North Macedonia has signed a historic security and defense deal with the European Union, marking a significant step in the country’s path toward deeper integration with Europe.
The agreement, which outlines a new framework for cooperation on security and defense issues, was signed by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, and North Macedonia’s Foreign Minister, Timco Mucunski.
“This is a historic moment in our cooperation, and a big step forward for a safer, more integrated Europe,” Borrell said in a post on X, previously Twitter. The deal is seen as a crucial development for both North Macedonia and the EU as they address current security challenges.
Minister Mucunski took to social media to announce that North Macedonia is the first country in the region to sign such a partnership. “It is a great honor to sign this agreement with High Representative Borrell, marking a historic moment in our relationship with the EU,” he stated.
During a joint press conference, Mucunski said that the partnership is a key step toward building a stronger, more united Europe, capable of tackling today’s security threats.
“We are fully committed to deepening this partnership and advancing our shared goals of peace, security, and cooperation,” Mucunski added.
The agreement is expected to enhance dialogue between the EU and North Macedonia on security matters, reinforcing the country’s role in the region’s stability. It also strengthens North Macedonia’s ties with the EU, following its membership in NATO in 2020.
As the first regional country to sign such a deal, North Macedonia continues to position itself as a key partner in Europe’s security framework.
