November 1, 2024 – Sali Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party (DP), has announced a strategy of civil disobedience in response to the upcoming 2025 elections, which he labeled an “electoral farce.” His remarks were made during a political talk show on Thursday evening, where he addressed questions from journalists regarding the party’s approach.
When asked if the DP had considered new strategies for the elections, Berisha confidently stated, “Yes, we have thought of a strategy,” emphasizing his belief that the current electoral process lacks legitimacy. “This is not an election; it is an electoral farce,” he asserted.
Journalist Arben Rakipllari pressed Berisha on his leadership, asking, “You are the chairman of DP; you must lead the opposition to victory. Are you driving it to victory or failure?” In response, Berisha drew on his past experiences of confronting dictatorship, noting, “I experienced a dictatorship; I faced it and it fell. Fighting a dictatorship is not easy.”
As the discussion progressed, Rakipllari highlighted the contrast between Berisha’s non grata status in the U.S. and the current government’s backing from American authorities. Acknowledging these challenges, Berisha emphasized the DP’s commitment to fighting for the Albanian people. “We are engaged in this battle for every Albanian. In this period, you cannot find a regime that has deported more than 1 million citizens over nine years,” he stated.
Concluding his comments, Berisha expressed a sense of determination regarding the DP’s future actions. “This dictatorship has no future. I assure you that these are just the initial steps in our movement.”
