The Albanian economy is integrating digital technologies across sectors, aiming for sustainable growth after years of relying on traditional industries. Once centered on coal, chrome, and agriculture, Albania is now shifting focus to tourism, construction, and digitalization to drive its progress.
Agritourism, a rapidly growing sector, is leading the way in this digital transformation. In the past six months, 349 agritourism businesses have undergone financial training and digital upgrades to streamline operations and enhance customer experiences. Entrepreneur Fabiola Duro, who participated in the initiative, noted, “Digital tools in agritourism are essential, as tourists increasingly expect these services.”
This shift is part of a broader effort to support small and medium-sized enterprises with digital solutions. “We focused on tourism, but digital education is crucial for all sectors,” said Ana Draskovic, another entrepreneur involved in the program.
Albania’s economy grew 4.06% in the second quarter, its highest in two years, largely due to construction and tourism, according to official data. Economists say digitalization is critical for long-term growth, as it reduces dependence on traditional sectors while creating new opportunities.
Entrepreneurs and policymakers hope digital reforms will help make Albania’s economy more inclusive, competitive, and sustainable. “Thirty years of financial education have laid the groundwork, and younger generations are increasingly comfortable with digital tools,” said Heriola Spahiu, a financial education advocate.
Policymakers view digital transformation as essential for Albania’s global competitiveness, aiming to meet modern standards while preserving local resources and traditions.
