The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has allocated €3.2 million to boost tourism in Albania’s Berat region, supporting the revitalization of Berat Castle and expanding access to scenic Mount Tomorr. This project is part of a broader €40 million EU-backed initiative aimed at enhancing Albania’s appeal as a cultural and natural tourism destination.
The project will focus on structural improvements and site accessibility to attract more visitors to Berat Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Around €1.6 million will go toward restoring Berat Castle, preserving its historic charm while improving access for tourists.
Meanwhile, Mount Tomorr, a popular destination for hiking and scenic views, will see a 15.2-kilometer road expansion connecting it from the Berat-Poliçan intersection to nearby villages. This road is expected to improve visitor access and promote eco-friendly tourism in the area.
EBRD’s funding forms part of Albania’s broader tourism and infrastructure initiative, co-financed by the European Union. Through technical assistance and investment grants, the EU and EBRD aim to position Albania as a sustainable tourism destination, preserving both cultural and natural heritage sites.
“EBRD is committed to sustainable tourism and community benefits,” said an EBRD representative. “This investment in Berat and Tomorr exemplifies our focus on economic and environmental priorities.”
The project also includes measures to curb erosion along the Osum River, protecting nearby roads and reducing soil loss. This aligns with EBRD’s goals of environmental preservation and cost-effective solutions.
With improvements underway at Berat Castle and Mount Tomorr, Albania aims to attract a broader spectrum of tourists, fostering economic growth while safeguarding cultural heritage.
