Today marks the 112th anniversary of Albania’s declaration of independence. On this day in 1912, Ismail Qemali raised the Albanian flag in Vlora, declaring the country sovereign and free.
The event is commemorated as Flag Day, a time when Albanians around the world remember the moment when 40 delegates signed the Act of Independence. This historic moment came at the end of years of struggle for national sovereignty.
The significance of November 28 is further deepened by a pivotal moment in the nation’s past. On this day in 1443, national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu liberated Kruja from the Ottomans, raising the Albanian flag above the city’s fortress.
This year’s celebrations are marked by cultural events throughout Albania and Kosovo, where the date is also observed. The country is also preparing to commemorate November 29 as the Day of Liberation from Nazi Germany.
