Oct 16, 2024 – The results of Montenegro’s 2023 population census, conducted from December 3 to 28, show the country has a total population of 623,633, with Albanians making up about 5 percent of the population.
The Statistical Institute of Montenegro (MONSTAT) released the findings, revealing that the majority of the population, 41.12 percent, are Montenegrins, while 32.93 percent identify as Serbs. Bosnians represent 9.45 percent, Russians 2.06 percent, and Albanians 4.97 percent.
In terms of religious affiliation, 71.1 percent of Montenegrins are Orthodox, 19.99 percent are Muslim, and 3.27 percent are Catholic.
The census data also highlighted the gender distribution, with 49.2 percent of the population being male and 50.8 percent female. The average age of the population is 39 years.
Language statistics show that 34.52 percent of people speak Montenegrin, while 43.18 percent speak Serbian, reflecting the country’s complex linguistic and ethnic makeup.
The 2023 census marks the most recent data collection, with the last census conducted in 2011.
