A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 struck Malatya in southeastern Turkey this morning, leaving 94 people injured and causing significant damage to two buildings.
The tremor, which occurred between 10:46 and 13:44 local time, was felt across the Eastern Anatolia, Southeast Anatolia, and Central Anatolia regions. Areas such as ?anl?urfa, Kahramanmara?, Siirt, Diyarbak?r, and Elaz?? also reported the effects of the quake.
Following the initial shock, 77 aftershocks were recorded, with magnitudes ranging from 0.7 to 3, further rattling the region. Elaz?? Governor Numan Hatipo?lu confirmed the injuries and noted that emergency services were dispatched to assist the affected areas.
In response to the quake, authorities have suspended classes for one day in the provinces of Malatya, Elaz??, and ?anl?urfa, while teams work to assess the full extent of the damage.
The earthquake has raised concerns about potential further seismic activity in the region, which remains on high alert.
