Oct 4, 2024 –Albania’s opposition leader, Sali Berisha, has called for a caretaker government to oversee the upcoming elections, saying it is crucial to ensure a fair vote. His remarks come ahead of a major opposition-led protest on October 7, which Berisha supports despite being under house arrest.
During a press conference, Berisha argued that without an independent caretaker government, Albanians could not trust the election process.
“A democratic opposition has the responsibility to defend the vote through peaceful means, but without a caretaker government, the vote is dead before it even reaches the ballot box,” Berisha said.
He urged Albania to follow the example of countries like Greece, where neutral governments are appointed to ensure fairness in elections. According to Berisha, this would safeguard peace and stability and promote Albania’s development.
When asked if he would attend the protest, Berisha, who is currently under house arrest, said he stood in solidarity with all demonstrators.
“To compare physical presence with the spirit or heart is vulgar. I stand with every protester,” he said, leaving his physical participation in question due to his legal restrictions.
