Oct 28, 2024 — Bulgaria’s centre-right GERB party has emerged victorious in the parliamentary election held on Sunday, according to preliminary results. With 26.08% of the votes counted, GERB leader Boyko Borissov announced plans to form a government, emphasizing cooperation with parties other than the ultra-nationalist Revival party, which secured 13.8% of the vote.
The reformist We Continue the Change (PP) party followed in second place with 14.76%, based on over 82% of votes counted by the state election commission. This election marks the seventh attempt in four years to establish a stable government, following an inconclusive vote in June.
Bulgaria has experienced a series of short-lived administrations since 2020, exacerbated by anti-graft protests that ousted the previous GERB-led coalition. Voters express concerns about potential instability, with many uncertain about the future of the newly proposed government.
Bulgaria is keen to enhance its governance to facilitate European Union funding for infrastructure projects and work towards adopting the euro, a goal currently delayed until at least January 25, 2025.
