Oct 8, 2024 – Sali Berisha, the former Prime Minister and leader of Albania’s main opposition party, has praised last night’s protest in central Tirana, despite a low turnout and incidents of violence, including demonstrators throwing Molotov cocktails at government buildings.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Berisha expressed his support for the protesters, stating that the opposition would continue its actions by blocking roads across the country. He emphasized the need for a caretaker government to oversee the general election scheduled for next year.
At 80 years old, Berisha is currently under house arrest and facing corruption charges. Nonetheless, he asserted that the opposition possesses its own strategies for ousting the current government, claiming a strong network of international partners supports their efforts.
Berisha’s comments come as tensions rise in Albania, where calls for political reform and accountability are intensifying. The opposition aims to increase pressure on the government in the lead-up to next year’s elections, seeking to ensure a transparent and fair electoral process.
