Oct 28, 2024 – Ali Ahmeti, the leader of the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) and a key figure in the Albanian opposition in North Macedonia, has raised alarms about the government’s treatment of ethnic Albanians in the country.
In letters sent to leaders in Albania, Kosovo, and Western nations, Ahmeti expressed concerns that recent governmental actions threaten the rights of ethnic Albanians and could destabilize the region.
The North Macedonian Constitutional Court is scheduled to review the Language Law in December, which protects Albanian as the country’s second official language.
Ahmeti’s letters point to several governmental decisions that he believes undermine these rights, including the potential annulment of the Language Law, a ban on a policy designed to facilitate the hiring of ethnic Albanians in public sector jobs, and the formation of a government that lacks fair representation of ethnic groups.
